Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the ideas of science teachers about STEM education and practices. The study group consisted of science teachers working in middle schools in Bursa county and other districts. “STEM Teacher Needs Assessment Questionnaire” was used in the study. n order to develop the form, firstly the literature was reviewed and researches on subjects such as the opening, history, content, characteristics and application of STEM education were also examined. In line with the information obtained, 56 questionnaire items were formed in the form of sentences by consulting an expert opinion on STEM (a program development and a science faculty member) by the researcher. Survey participants agents; It consists of 4-dimensional different items for STEM education, for the contributions of STEM to students, for self-assessment of STEM, and for evaluating the physical conditions required for STEM. Participants were expected to choose the most appropriate one among the expressions such as "Strongly Disagree", "Partially Agree", "Strongly Agree" presented for the items in the questionnaire. Cronbach Alpha test was used to test the reliability of the questionnaire items. The Cronbach Alpha value of the questionnaire form used in the study was calculated as a high value as 0.92. According to the test results, it can be said that the items in this questionnaire, which was created as a data collection tool, are reliable. The total implementation period of the questionnaires took approximately 4 months after obtaining official permissions. The data obtained from the research were analyzed using frequency and percentage. In the study, teachers' opinions about STEM education and applications, STEM's contribution to students, STEM self-evaluation and physical conditions required for STEM were collected. Although the majority of teachers think that using STEM activities in lessons is tiring for the teacher, that these activities are not suitable for all science subjects, weekly science class hours are not enough to apply STEM activities, STEM activities are necessary to raise talented students, and students have high-level thinking skills. and they think it provides problem-solving skills. In addition, these activities are more beneficial to teach lessons, students 'academic achievement increases, students learn more lasting, increase students' interest in the course, as well as give students the opportunity to produce creative ideas, activities should be associated with problems in daily life, and lack of material creates difficulties while implementing It is also among the results that they think that the implementation will not cause a lot of time loss and that competition between groups is not bad, and that it is not difficult to evaluate these activities. They stated that it is too much, there is a need for students, they have some deficiencies about STEM and how the physical conditions required for STEM should be. The majority of the teachers experienced difficulties in applying STEM activities, they can reach the level of students while applying these activities, they have sufficient skills while applying STEM activities in learning-teaching environments, they have sufficient content knowledge about STEM, they can improve students' learning performance by using STEM. that he finds it appropriate to use his activities in his lessons, guides the students sufficiently while implementing the activities, sciences always use their activities, they can work more comfortably in the classroom with STEM activities, they can attract students' attention to the lesson more easily with these activities they participate. He can also evaluate the results of STEM activities in a versatile way, can prepare different STEM activities on his own, while applying STEM activities during these activities, he emphasized that students use their time well. do the activities that students expect them to explore before they do in the classroom and and problems in associating science subjects with STEM during the lesson, He also experienced problems between disciplines while applying STEM activities, They are of the opinion that they also have shortcomings in technology and engineering.
