Abstract

The potter's wheel has been recognized throughout the history of ceramics as one of the most fundamental forming techniques. Traditionally, it has been associated with the production of functional ceramic vessels, where technical precision, symmetry, and craftsmanship were considered essential qualities. Beyond facilitating the shaping process, the wheel became one of the defining tools of ceramic production. However, developments in contemporary ceramic art have transformed this conventional understanding. Today, the potter's wheel is increasingly regarded not only as a technical forming method but also as a medium through which artists explore conceptual, aesthetic, and experimental approaches. Consequently, traditional production techniques have acquired new meanings within contemporary artistic practice.

Many contemporary ceramic artists reinterpret conventional production methods by emphasizing the visibility of the making process rather than technical perfection. Repetition, movement, deformation, layering, and material intervention are intentionally incorporated into ceramic works as expressive elements. Within this perspective, the potter's wheel becomes more than a device for producing functional forms; it serves as a means of communicating ideas related to process, temporality, individuality, and artistic experimentation. This transformation also reflects the changing relationship between craft and contemporary art.

Although numerous studies have examined the historical development and technical characteristics of the potter's wheel, research focusing on its conceptual use through the works of specific contemporary ceramic artists remains limited. Most previous studies primarily discuss wheel throwing as a forming technique or as part of ceramic history, while relatively few investigate how this traditional method is reinterpreted as a conceptual artistic practice. This gap in the literature constitutes the basis of the present study.

The purpose of this research is to examine the conceptual use of the potter's wheel through the artistic practice of Japanese ceramic artist Tomoya Sakai. Rather than evaluating the wheel solely as a technical production method, the study investigates how traditional wheel throwing functions as a medium supporting conceptual expression in Sakai's ceramic works. By focusing on a single artist, the research aims to provide a detailed case study demonstrating how traditional ceramic techniques can be reinterpreted within contemporary art.

The research was conducted using a qualitative research approach, and document analysis was adopted as the primary research method. The theoretical framework was established through a review of literature concerning the historical development of the potter's wheel, contemporary ceramic art, and discussions on the relationship between craft and art. In addition to academic publications, exhibition catalogues, artist statements, and visual documentation related to Tomoya Sakai were examined.

The study corpus consists of selected works from Tomoya Sakai's Heritage, ReCollection, Spirit, Connection, and Arche series. The artworks were selected according to their relevance to the research purpose, their representation of the artist's use of the potter's wheel, the accessibility of written and visual documentation, and their formal diversity. Since the purpose of the study is not to analyze the artist's entire body of work but to understand the conceptual transformation of wheel throwing through representative examples, purposive sampling was considered appropriate.

The collected data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. During the analysis process, the selected works were examined according to predetermined themes including form, surface characteristics, repetition, layering, deformation, traces of wheel movement, and the visibility of the production process. Formal observations were evaluated together with the artist's own statements and relevant literature in order to establish a balanced interpretation supported by available evidence. Interpretations presented in this study are therefore based on the relationship between visual observations, documentary sources, and theoretical discussions rather than on assumptions concerning the artist's intentions.

The findings indicate that Tomoya Sakai employs the potter's wheel beyond its conventional technical function. Instead of producing standardized functional forms, the artist intentionally emphasizes movement, repetition, layering, and visible traces of making throughout the production process. These formal characteristics contribute not only to the visual appearance of the works but also to their conceptual interpretation. The production process itself becomes an essential component of artistic expression.

The analysis also demonstrates that rhythmic repetitions generated through wheel movement, together with layered surfaces and intentionally preserved deformations, strengthen the visibility of process and temporality within the artworks. When considered alongside the artist's statements and the relevant literature, these formal characteristics may be associated with concepts such as memory, individuality, transformation, and continuity. However, these associations should be regarded as analytical interpretations developed within the scope of this study rather than definitive explanations of the artist's intentions.

Another significant finding concerns Sakai's experimental approach to ceramic production. Rather than concealing marks created during the making process, the artist intentionally preserves irregularities, surface interventions, and traces of manual manipulation. This approach shifts attention from the completed object toward the act of making itself. Consequently, the potter's wheel functions not merely as a technical device but as a medium that reveals the relationship between material, movement, artistic intervention, and conceptual expression.

In conclusion, this study evaluates the conceptual use of the potter's wheel through the example of Tomoya Sakai and demonstrates how a traditional ceramic forming technique can be reinterpreted within contemporary ceramic art. The findings suggest that the potter's wheel may be understood not only as a technical production method but also as a medium supporting conceptual and artistic expression. Nevertheless, the results are limited to the selected works examined in this research and should not be generalized to all contemporary ceramic practices. Future comparative studies involving different contemporary ceramic artists may contribute to a broader understanding of the conceptual transformation of traditional ceramic techniques. It is anticipated that this research will contribute to the literature on contemporary ceramic art by providing a detailed case study on the conceptual reinterpretation of the potter's wheel while offering a useful reference for future studies in this field.
