Abstract

This study's main objective and significance lies in highlighting the necessity of addressing sustainability within design disciplines, particularly in packaging design, through reuse focused approaches, in the context of increasing resource consumption and waste problems. It is noteworthy that studies on sustainable packaging design in the literature largely focus on recycling, while the reuse approach is addressed only to a limited extent. Accordingly, this study examines reuse-focused packaging designs through sample designs using a qualitative research method. Today, the rapid depletion of natural resources, problems in accessing energy and raw materials, and the deepening crises of global warming and climate change have made environmentally focused approaches in design disciplines inevitable. Packaging waste, which occupies a significant place within global waste problems, is one of the largest types of waste in the world and stands out as a priority area of intervention from a sustainable design perspective. Reducing this waste is an important goal for everyone who wants to protect the environment. Therefore, the fact that packaging, a critical interface between the product and the user, produces a high amount of waste despite its short lifespan, necessitates a reassessment of environmental impacts in design processes. In this context, the understanding of waste management has also undergone a transformation, evolving from purely recycling-focused approaches to more comprehensive strategies. The evolution of the traditional 3R approach into the 5R reduce, reuse, recycle, reject, and repair model contributes to the development of more holistic solutions in terms of resource efficiency and waste reduction in design processes. These principles require the adoption of an understanding in packaging design that encompasses both the production process and the post-use life cycle of the product. On the other hand, the fact that packaging maintains its physical presence even after the product is consumed makes it a critical element in terms of waste management. The fact that packaging often becomes direct waste after use necessitates the evaluation of repurposing and second-use possibilities in the design process. Reusable designs developed in this direction extend the life of the packaging, transforming it from a single-use object into a functional and sustainable product. With these designs, the function of the packaging does not end after the consumer's first use of the product; on the contrary, the second, sometimes third or fourth functions envisioned in the packaging design process come into play. The packaging, which successfully completes its task of protecting and transporting the product, can then be adapted to different areas of use and gain new functions. This transformation ensures that the packaging ceases to be a waste element and becomes an active part of daily life.

As can be seen from the four examples examined in the study, reusable packaging designs can sometimes be designed to transform into a household item, sometimes into a toy, and sometimes into a light bulb. Designs developed with this approach, in addition to their basic functions, become a tool that redefines the consumer experience in terms of sustainability. Designing packaging with a second function both reduces material waste and contributes to establishing an emotional and functional connection between the consumer and the product. In this process, the consumer can actively participate in stages such as painting, personalization, cutting, and assembly according to the guidance provided by the design to transform the packaging into a second function, thus moving from being a passive user to becoming a part of the design process. In this context, reusable packaging design offers an alternative approach to the single-use concept in line with sustainable design principles. Designers aim to extend the life cycle of packaging by developing multifunctional, modular, and recyclable solutions.

The findings of the study show that reusable packaging designs go beyond being a single-use item; they allow packaging that has completed its primary function to be reused for other purposes, thus extending its lifespan, reducing waste, and encouraging consumers to interact with the packaging for other uses. Furthermore, these designs become a brand element representing the product through their aesthetic and functional features, while providing environmental benefits. In conclusion, it is understood that reusable packaging designs are an effective tool in achieving sustainability goals and have the potential to inspire creative applications in this field. The reusable approach contributes to the field by both filling a gap in the literature and revealing its potential to offer environmental and functional contributions to design and brand strategies. Sustainable packaging design is considered an important tool that lays the groundwork for the development of a conscious and responsible design approach in line with the goal of creating a cleaner and more livable environment.
