Abstract

The word "Yörük" is derived from the verb "yörümek," meaning "to walk," and carries the meanings of "nomad" and "migratory." "Yörük" actually refers to the nomadic Oghuz tribes who came to Anatolia and settled in this region. In addition, the terms Yörük and Turkmen refer to the same ethnic group. Due to the terrain, the Yörüks were mostly concentrated in the Mediterranean region. They have been living for many years, especially in the mountainous areas of the triangle formed by the cities of Antalya, Mersin, and Konya. Within this triangle, the Mersin region has been a permanent settlement area for the Yörük people. In particular, the mountainous region between the districts of Tarsus and Silifke (now districts of Mersin province, the Bulgar Mountains) and the Taşeli area were settlement areas of the Oghuz tribes (Varsak Turkmens) who came to Anatolia after the Battle of Malazgirt.

The majority of the Sarıkeçili tribe has now adopted a settled lifestyle and resides in various districts of Mersin province. This tribe settles in Mersin province during the winter and in the Seydişehir district of Konya province during the summer, thus partially maintaining seasonal movement despite the transition to a settled life. The Erdemli Yoruks, however, have adopted a settled lifestyle for various reasons, such as education and economic development.

The tools and equipment used by the Yoruks in their daily lives are made from durable materials. They are easily portable, reflecting their lifestyle, as mobility and functionality were essential requirements of nomadic life. Living in close contact with nature, the Yoruk communities have crafted various kitchen utensils from materials such as soil, wood, and animal hides. The various everyday objects belonging to the Erdemli Yoruks reflect a rich accumulation of information about their kitchen and daily lives. These objects are noteworthy as important sources reflecting the traditions and customs of the Yoruks in the region, as well as their past ways of life and artistic sensibilities. Particularly noteworthy among the cultural assets of the Erdemli Yoruks are the everyday objects used by their elders after the transition to settled life, which are preserved as mementos today. This study aims to investigate these important artifacts, which have not been the subject of any previous research, and to present the findings to the scientific community.

Comprehensive field research for this study was conducted in the Kösbucağı and Sorgun neighborhoods of Erdemli District, Mersin Province, between May 8, 2025, and August 21, 2025. Various everyday objects inherited from ancestors were examined, measured, and documented with photographs. These objects included kitchen-related items such as utensils, crocks, trays, cookers, sieves, mortars, and hand mills, as well as weaving implements such as spinning wheels and combs. In addition, implements related to agricultural and livestock activities, namely a threshing board, hand mitt (ellik), shearing tool (kırklık), and the mantız device used for heating purposes, have been examined in detail and introduced in the Findings section.

The research revealed that many of the tools and implements studied in this work share similarities in both name and use with objects used by the Yoruk people across various parts of Anatolia. However, this study did not find any evidence that the object called "mantız," used for heating, was used by the Yoruk people in different regions.

The Yoruk culture in the Erdemli district has ensured the preservation of various cultural assets from the past to the present. These cultural assets, used by the Yoruk people for centuries, provide important insights into their way of life. These objects, which constitute cultural heritage, have now been replaced by factory-produced tools and equipment due to the spread of settled life. Although access to these objects and the knowledge associated with them is still possible today, thanks to individuals of Yörük origin, it is of great importance that these tangible cultural assets, which are evidence of the nomadic way of life, are preserved and passed on to future generations to prevent their disappearance. These artifacts, which can be regarded as some of the last surviving examples of the traditional handicrafts of the Erdemli Yörüks and which were kept as heirlooms from ancestors, should be protected and promoted in ethnographic museums or private collections.
